Overview

Introduction

Understand the ICBucket architecture, decentralized subaccount isolation, and reverse-gas storage model.

Introduction

ICBucket is the decentralized cloud storage infrastructure for Web3 applications, AI agents, and dApps. Instead of hosting assets on centralized cloud providers like AWS S3 or Google Cloud Storage, ICBucket stores raw binary blobs and file chunks directly within canister smart contract stable memory on the Internet Computer.

Prerequisites

  • Basic familiarity with Web3 concepts and client-side JavaScript or Python.
  • Understanding of public vs private file access models.

Why ICBucket vs AWS S3 & IPFS

FeatureAWS S3IPFS / FilecoinICBucket
Payment ModelMonthly credit card + egress billingToken staking / pinning contracts30-day fixed ICP plans from wallet balance
Storage MediumCentralized US/EU server farmsP2P DHT nodes requiring pinningOn-chain canister stable memory
Edge CDNCloudFront (extra egress cost)Third-party gateways (rate-limited)Native cdn.icpay.app Edge CDN included
ImmutabilitySubject to account suspensionPinning can expireCryptographically signed on-chain state
API KeysAWS IAM secretsGateway JWTsIn-dApp granular Read/Write API keys

Architectural Overview

Each ICBucket operates with complete cryptographic isolation:

  1. Canister Stable Memory: Files are partitioned into 2MB binary chunks and written into 64-bit stable memory that survives canister upgrades.
  2. Subaccount Ownership: Assets and write privileges are restricted to the owner's Internet Identity principal or delegated API keys.
  3. Dual Link Resolution: Every file generates both a fast edge CDN URL (https://cdn.icpay.app/cloud/{bucket}/{file}) and a direct on-chain canister URL (https://{canisterId}.raw.icp0.io/...).

Verification

You can verify canister immutability and module hashes on-chain at any time via official IC boundary nodes:

dfx canister --network ic status 6vbhm-nqaaa-aaaan-q6muq-cai
